Hurricane? Super Storm? Just Be Ready!
Many of our friends and neighbors have moved down south over the years, either full time or as snowbirds. Hurricanes Helene and Milton cut through their homes. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was in the path of the hurricanes. Here in Fairfield, the storms are usually downgraded to “Superstorms” or “tropical storms” by the time they hit us, but that doesn’t mean they are not dangerous. There are several things you can do now, long before an emergency, to prepare.
- Put together a basic emergency kit, with food, water, medicine, flashlights and more.
- Check your emergency equipment regularly. This includes flashlights, storm shutters, and your generator.
- Create or review your family emergency plan, and make sure everyone in the household understands it. Keep a copy in your emergency kit.
- Review your insurance policies for flood damage, water events and personal property.
- Plan for your pets – many shelters won’t take animals.
- Keep trees around the home trimmed.
- Have the materials on hand to board up windows and doors, and know how to secure your garage door. If you wait until a storm’s coming, stores may not have the boards and tape you need.
