Prepare Your Heating System for Winter

- 4:48 pm - October 24th, 2018

Believe it or not, winter is on its way! Soon you’ll be turning up your heating system to protect your comfort from dropping temperatures. There are some things, however, you should do before turning your equipment on for the first time! Here are some tips on how to prepare your heating system and your home for winter:

Change or Clean Air Filters

Dirty air filters in your furnace can cause several problems, such as preventing your system from heating your home adequately and efficiently. Stay on top of furnace filter changes throughout the heating months to keep your system working properly.

Seal Air Leaks

Prevent drafts and stop wasting energy in your home by sealing windows and doors with caulk and weather stripping. Leaky ductwork can be sealed with mastic or aluminum tape.

Clean the Outdoor Unit

External compressors are exposed to the elements, so be sure to check for any debris or damage. Remove debris around the unit to prevent dirt and leaves from getting inside the unit, and trim back any trees or bushes that overhang the equipment.

Test Alarms and Detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are essential to your safety. Replace batteries regularly and replace your smoke detectors every 10 years. Push the test button on each device to ensure that they are working properly.
